The Three Top Hardscaping Options

hardscaping-canadaWhen considering your landscaping options, don’t forget about hardscaping. Hardscape is a term that refers to the stone and paved areas that is part of a landscaped area. For instance, stone steps, brick paths, concrete sidewalks, and patios are all examples of hardscaping.

Just like softscaping (installing live plant matter, such as trees, flowers, shrubs, grass, etc.), there are all different types of hardscape options from which you can choose for your landscaping project. Since there are so many options, there are a wide range of prices, giving you lots of choice for your particular size of budget. With that in mind, the following are three hardscaping material options for you to consider:

1.      Brick pavers. Brick tends to be very good for driveways, pathways, and patios.  Brick is non-slip and porous, enabling it to hold up against the elements, such as water and sun, as well as chlorine. While we tend to think of the traditional brick red color when we think of bricks, brick pavers can be found in several neutral tones that harmonize well with many landscapes.

2.      Concrete pavers. Made from cement, concrete pavers tend to be ideal for patios, walkways, and around pools. Concrete can be made to look very simple, smooth and plain. It is also available in different textures and colors for those looking for a little more flair or a custom appearance at a relatively low cost.

 3.      Natural stone pavers. This hardscaping option includes stones that are cut from tough materials such as limestone, marble, granite, bluestone, sandstone, travertine, or slate. They are extremely weather resistant and durable. They are highly suitable for multiple outdoor structures and because they are crafted from natural materials, can offer a variety of color choices and natural stone textures.

Once you know what hardscape options are available to you in your area, you need to think about what you need and want for your landscaping project. For instance, you’ll want to determine the size of the space you are covering with the hardscape material, where it is located, and how it will fit in with your softscaping plans. You also need to think about drainage and grading when planning your project to ensure that your landscaping not only comes out beautiful, but has been done properly.

Additionally, don’t skimp on the project base. Follow all of the manufacturer’s guidelines or make sure that your landscaper is putting the proper amounts of stone, sand and pressure.

When planning your landscaping project, keep in mind that it is always in your best interest to check out everything that is available and appeals to you. Do not just assume that certain hardscaping projects will be too expensive or too difficult. For instance, it is a common misconception that brick laying is harder to do and more costly than other methods.
Therefore, carefully think about what you want and do your research. It’s also a good idea to consult at least one professional landscaper or landscaping company  for ideas, as well as to obtain an estimate about how much your project will cost, especially if you intend to have your landscaping done by professionals.
